Sustainability

Peurunka has been awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland label.
Spa & Resort Peurunka has been awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) label, a recognition from Visit Finland for long-term and goal-oriented sustainability efforts in the tourism industry. The STF programme is based on the development of sustainable tourism and supports tourism operators on their journey towards increasingly responsible operations. The label is awarded to organisations that meet strict criteria and are committed to continuous improvement.
The Sustainable Travel Finland label complements the Biosphere certification we previously received, an internationally recognised acknowledgement of our responsible operations. Behind these labels lies extensive development work aimed at making sustainability an integral part of Peurunka’s daily life – from the perspectives of the environment, people, and the local community. Sustainability is not a single action, but continuous work and learning. We believe that small actions lead to great impacts, and we want to encourage our guests to make responsible choices during their stay.
💚 Thank you for joining us on the journey towards a more sustainable tomorrow.
Responsible Peurunka
Our sustainability efforts focus on ecological, socio-cultural, and economic responsibility. Our actions include utilising renewable energy, improving recycling, and supporting the local community. We also take the surrounding nature into account when planning our operations. Our guests can contribute to our sustainability work through their choices, and together we build a more sustainable future.
When you visit us, you are also visiting responsibly – welcome!

Ecological responsibility
Our thermal energy is mainly produced from bioenergy (pellets).
A pellet heating plant, operated by Adven, is in operation and the spa swims in more climate-friendly heated water. The pellet heating plant has reduced carbon dioxide emissions from heating the spa, the ice rink and the holiday homes by more than 90%.
The spa hotel’s 7,500 m2 main building, 3,000-4,500 cubic metres of pool and wash water, ice rink and holiday homes are heated with domestic wood pellets. The fuel, pellets, is currently sourced from the local wood processing industry. The technology for the new heating plant is also sourced locally, from Kyyjärvi, just over 100 km away.
Other:
Recycling: Peurunka actively recycles glass, plastic, paper, cardboard and other waste, such as electronic equipment.
The aim is to reduce food waste through careful meal planning and by encouraging customers to pay attention to their choices.

Socio-cultural responsibility
Peurunka works in partnership with the local community, using local produce where possible, providing jobs for local people and participating in local events. Peurunka is involved in preserving the local cultural heritage, with the Korsu Museum located in the Peurunka area. In summer 2025, Peurunka opened the Saraakallio Experience Centre for the whole family, showcasing the largest rock paintings in Fennoscandia, located in Laukaa.
We will ensure that our operations are inclusive and accessible, providing services for all customers, including accessible facilities and routes, and individually tailored experiences. For example, we have accommodated customers of other genders in the spa’s changing rooms. Equality and equity also guide staff recruitment and operations.

Economic responsibility
Peurunka’s economic responsibility is based on sustainable business principles that support the well-being of both the company and the local community. We prefer local producers and service providers in our procurement, which strengthens the local economy and jobs. We also provide permanent and seasonal jobs for local residents, especially young people.
Responsible investments, such as improving energy efficiency, help reduce environmental impacts and control costs. A diversified range of services and a focus on sustainable tourism will ensure economic stability in the future. By doing so, we are building the basis for long-term and responsible growth.
